Game 6: Detroit AT Washington

These are presented with out much commentary as I'm pretty busy and the Wings have another game in about two hours. I will say that I don't think that the Red Wings played that bad. A few defensive miscues, some good breaks for Washington, and special teams goals all adds up to a lopsided loss to a team that isn't that much better (if at all) than the Wings.

Game 5: Detroit vs Columbus

Columbus came into Detroit as the lone win less team in the NHL and left on Friday night as the lone win less team in the NHL. The play at even strength was pretty even, but the Red Wings separated themselves on the power play. Columbus didn't generate a single power play scoring chance that I tracked tonight while Detroit had three chances (more "opportunities" which either didn't get to the net, were from too far out to really be considered a "chance" or weren't able to even get a shot away.) and seemed to capitalize on many of their chances regardless of game state.

As always, big ups go to Vic Ferrari of Time On Ice fame and his wonderful script allowing me to present these numbers.

The Red Wings numbers are in red (hooray backround's with different colors!) and Columbus' are in blue. Detroit only out-chanced Columbus by one at even strength, 7-6 but held a 13-8 advantage for the game on the back of their three man-up chances -- two of them coming on the 5-on-3 that Nick Lidstrom eventually scored on.

Head to Head Chart
(Lineup's compiled from Vic Ferrari's shift chart for the game)

How to read the chart: The entire chart is from the Wings perspective. Any black number is a positive number, a red number is a negative. If there is a zero in the space, it means the player was even for whatever match-up you're looking at. If there is a blank space, the player was not on the ice with the other player in question.
  • Radek Martinek was crushed by Darren Helm early in the game (Martinek's first shift, actually) and never returned. Because of this, Columbus seemed to rotate Fedor Tyutin with Aaron Johnson and Grant Clitsome.
  • I found it interesting that the last of the four forward lines for Detroit to see the ice tonight was the Hudler-Filppula-Franzen line.
  • Clearly-Datsyuk-Zetterberg took advantage of Aaron Johnson's increased ice time with Johnson being a -3 overall against that line. The top Wings forward unit was positive against both of Columbus' top line.
  • Typical of any line Sami Pahlsson's ever been apart of in his entire existence on this earth, his opposition didn't do much of anything. Anyone Pahlsson went up against were negative in the scoring chance department.
  • Speaking of defense, Darren Helm subjectively had a good game. He comes out -1 here but while watching the game I kept making mental notes of Helm either having a good back-check or good stick-check or good body-check or being in the right place to shut off a passing lane. Just goes to show that scoring chance tracking is still missing nuances of the game.
  • Per usual, Nick Lidstrom and Ian White really mitigated anything the Jackets' top line wanted to do all night. Yawn.
  • The teams started at a quick pace combining for eight chances in the first period and five of those came in the first 10½ minutes of the game. Beyond that, though, it wasn't too frenetic of a game with prime time scoring chances.

Game 4: Detroit AT Minnesota

I've finally had the chance to catch back up with the Red Wings games (just in time for a back-to-back set on Friday/Saturday). If you'd like to re-read the recap of Detroit's 3-2 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild -- and who wouldn't? -- that's here. The beloved CSSI analysis is right here as well.

The team totals were as such:

Period Totals EV PP 5v3 PP SH 5v3 SH
1 5 1 4 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0
2 3 4 3 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
3 6 1 6 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
4 2 2 1 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Totals 16 8 14 8 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

As always, the Red Wings totals are in bold. The shot total was well in Detroit's favor at 41-14 and the chances were equally as good. Detroit held a 14-8 advantage at even strength and despite a five-or-so minute stretch to start the second period -- a sect of time where Detroit was sloppy, looked sluggish, and overall bad -- the wings played a pretty flawless game.

All the scoring chances I tracked can be seen in the following table.

The Head-to-Head Chart

You can click to enlarge the chart.

How to read the chart: The entire chart is from the Wings perspective. Any black number is a positive number, a red number is a negative. If there is a zero in the space, it means the player was even for whatever match-up you're looking at. If there is a blank space, the player was not on the ice with the other player in question.
Note: The Minnesota lineup was configured off of Vic Ferrari's shift chart graph for the game.
  • Brad Stuart and Nik Kronwall struggled mightily against the second line for Minnesota which was comprised of Latendresse-Cullen-Bouchard. Stuart was a -4 against that line alone and didn't have a positive differential overall against any Minnesota player.
  • Cleary-Datsyuk-Zetterberg really took it to any Wild combination thrown at them. They were positive against the Wild's top line of Setoguchi-Koivu-Heatley and the third line of Brodziak-Clutterbuck-Gillies. On the back end, Minnesota didn't have luck with any one of the three defensive pairings as the Wings top line racked up at least one scoring chance for against all three.
  • Hudler-Filppula-Franzen managed to isolate the Wild's third line and first defensive pairing of Shultz-Zidlicky a decent amount and they dominated. Jiri Hudler in particular was amazing against this match-up, getting almost a full five scoring chances against the Wild's third line and four chances against their top defensive pairing.
  • Nick Lidstrom and Ian White were a +2 against the Wild's top line.
  • Ken Daniels mentioned after Ian White scored that Mike Babcock "juggled the defensive pairings." While it is is true, it's misleading. Preceding the White goal, the Wings were on a power play and the defensive pairing for the majority of that power play was Kronwall and Stuart. After they left the ice, there wasn't a lot of power play time left and Babcock threw out Lidstrom and Ericsson to finish the power play. This then threw a monkey wrench into the intended defensive pairings. White came out with Jakub Kindl and then Kronwall-Stuart followed that. Once they left, Babcock came back with Lidstrom-Ericsson because White-Kindl had a full 90 second shift (or thereabouts) and White was unlikely to be prepared to go back out with his defensive partner. Ericsson changed and Lidstrom followed suit a few seconds after that. Once that happened and White recovered enough to come back out with Jakub Kindl, White scored on a wrister from the slot. White and Kindl didn't look to be intentionally paired together the rest of the night, save for one shift with around two minutes left in regulation.

Game 3: Detroit vs Vancouver

Better late than never is what I always say. After a crazy weekend in which I attended the Grand Rapids Griffins home opener on Friday -- very thorough write-up of it by Jason Kasiorek here -- (and spent the two subsequent days recovering from), I've finally gotten the scoring chances tracked for last week's 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. If the CSSI stats tickle your fancy, they can be found --penned by JJ, of course -- here.

Before I start, a nice stick-tap to Corey Sznajder of The Shutdown Line, a Carolina Hurricanes blog. For whatever reason, I set the DVR to record the game at the wrong time and missed the first 12-or-so minutes of the game. Corey's tracking chances for the 'Canes this year and was kind enough to track the chances for the portion of the game that I missed. Even if you're not a 'Canes fan, I'd ask you all to head on over to Corey's blog because he's a machine with very good, in-depth articles and analysis. Plus, he's an all-around good dude.

And with that, the scoring chances!

All of the Red Wings chances are in bold.

I'd like to take the chance to say that I was far more judicious when it comes to what is and isn't a chance. As a result, I feel that this game's data is much better reflection of what happened compared to the first two games I tracked.

JJ titled his recap thread "You Take The Ugly One," and that's a pretty accurate assessment of the game. Detroit took over the middle portion of the second period, but really wasn't controlling the game at any other point -- and the third period was a proverbial snooze fest as the Wings possessed the puck much more than Vancouver but it didn't generate much in the way of quality scoring chances.
Overall, the teams were even at even strength, 8-8.

Here's the list of all the chances tracked for the game:

The entire Hudler-Franzen-Filppula line looked good against Vancouver, with the three combining to be +6 at even strength. The foruth line of Holmstrom-Emmerton-Miller didn't fare too well, with all three being the worst in even strength time, albeit few minutes.

The Head To Head chart:

You can click to enlarge the chart.

How to read the chart: The entire chart is from the Wings perspective. Any black number is a positive number, a red number is a negative. If there is a zero in the space, it means the player was even for whatever match-up you're looking at. If there is a blank space, the player was not on the ice with the other player in question. Hopefully that makes sense.

I looked over the shift charts, reorganized them to put lines together and both coaches stuck with the lines that they had pre-game. That is also, by the way, where I got the line combinations for Vancouver before tracking the game. So, the head to head here is valid.
  • The Hudler-Filppula-Franzen line thrived against the Canucks first and third lines. They also really piled it on the Ballard-Tanev, Vancouver's third defensive pairing. While they were facing a tough offensive line in the Sedin Brothers and Burrows, once they were beyond them, the rear-guards weren't too good.
  • Nick Lidstrom and Ian White did a good job limiting the Sedins and Burrows, coming out positive in total chances against the top Vancouver line.
  • The fourth line was out there against the Canucks third line a bit and really struggled.
  • The tide of the second period turned for Detroit around the 5-6 minute mark. The Wings out-chanced Vancouver 7-3 in the middle frame and that's with Vancouver getting two chances before the first five minutes passed. Detroit racked up six straight scoring chances from 6:30 in until the end of the period.
  • Like I said, I counted only three prime scoring chances in the third period total. Detroit maintained possession of the puck and were forcing the issue, however, it didn't translate into many shots or chances.
