Game 3: Detroit vs Vancouver

Better late than never is what I always say. After a crazy weekend in which I attended the Grand Rapids Griffins home opener on Friday -- very thorough write-up of it by Jason Kasiorek here -- (and spent the two subsequent days recovering from), I've finally gotten the scoring chances tracked for last week's 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Before I start, a nice stick-tap to Corey Sznajder of The Shutdown Line, a Carolina Hurricanes blog. For whatever reason, I set the DVR to record the game at the wrong time and missed the first 12-or-so minutes of the game. Corey's tracking chances for the 'Canes this year and was kind enough to track the chances for the portion of the game that I missed. Even if you're not a 'Canes fan, I'd ask you all to head on over to Corey's blog because he's a machine with very good, in-depth articles and analysis. Plus, he's an all-around good dude.

I'd like to take the chance to say that I was far more judicious when it comes to what is and isn't a chance. As a result, I feel that this game's data is much better reflection of what happened compared to the first two games I tracked.

JJ titled his recap thread "You Take The Ugly One," and that's a pretty accurate assessment of the game. Detroit took over the middle portion of the second period, but really wasn't controlling the game at any other point -- and the third period was a proverbial snooze fest as the Wings possessed the puck much more than Vancouver but it didn't generate much in the way of quality scoring chances.
Overall, the teams were even at even strength, 8-8.

Top Even Strength Forward: Jiri Hudler, +3

The entire Hudler-Franzen-Filppula line looked good against Vancouver, with the three combining to be +6 at even strength. The foruth line of Holmstrom-Emmerton-Miller didn't fare too well, with all three being the worst in even strength time, albeit few minutes.

How to read the chart: The entire chart is from the Wings perspective. Any black number is a positive number, a red number is a negative. If there is a zero in the space, it means the player was even for whatever match-up you're looking at. If there is a blank space, the player was not on the ice with the other player in question. Hopefully that makes sense.

I looked over the shift charts, reorganized them to put lines together and both coaches stuck with the lines that they had pre-game. That is also, by the way, where I got the line combinations for Vancouver before tracking the game. So, the head to head here is valid.
  • The Hudler-Filppula-Franzen line thrived against the Canucks first and third lines. They also really piled it on the Ballard-Tanev, Vancouver's third defensive pairing. While they were facing a tough offensive line in the Sedin Brothers and Burrows, once they were beyond them, the rear-guards weren't too good.
  • Nick Lidstrom and Ian White did a good job limiting the Sedins and Burrows, coming out positive in total chances against the top Vancouver line.
  • The fourth line was out there against the Canucks third line a bit and really struggled.
  • The tide of the second period turned for Detroit around the 5-6 minute mark. The Wings out-chanced Vancouver 7-3 in the middle frame and that's with Vancouver getting two chances before the first five minutes passed. Detroit racked up six straight scoring chances from 6:30 in until the end of the period.
  • Like I said, I counted only three prime scoring chances in the third period total. Detroit maintained possession of the puck and were forcing the issue, however, it didn't translate into many shots or chances.
